EFFECT OF TRANSFORMATIONAL AND PARTICIPATIVE LEADERSHIP STYLES ON SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN KANO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract 

This research examined how transformational and participative leadership styles affect social entrepreneurship in Kano State, Nigeria. The study is based on a survey research design through which data were gathered using questionnaires from respondents in eleven Local Government Areas (L.G.A) of Kano State, Nigeria. it relied on primary data using descriptive statistics to summarize the data. The data were analyzed using Ordinary Least Square Regression, the result of which shows that transformational and participative leadership styles both have significant and positive effects on the social entrepreneurship in Kano State.  It is concluded that transformational and participatory leadership styles are both effective for Kano state to adopt in order to reduce the social difficulties that the state is facing, which would in turn benefit social entrepreneurs in Kano state. This led to a recommendation that the government identify and encourage Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO’s), Small Businesses, Community Leaders, Rich Individuals and Political Organisations on social entrepreneurship programs that would enable them to train and empower communities with entrepreneurial skills, thereby reducing social issues that the state is currently dealing with.

Introduction During the past two decades, the developing economy has been confronted with a variety of social problems, including but not limited to poverty, unemployment, abuse of children, and many others that plague humanity. In the meantime, new concerns are emerging about issues such as climate change, population growth, human trafficking, COVID 19, economic collapse, high crime rates, insecurity, and illiteracy. In addition, it is believed that the efforts being made right now to address these societal problems are fruitless. As a direct consequence of this, the development of social entrepreneurs’ solutions requires the utilization of novel approaches and paradigms.
